There is apparently a bug in either Explorer or Blogger that prevents the blog from loading if the "Google Followers Widget" is located on the blog. Some of you may have seen the following message display:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://<Web site>.com.
Operation aborted
To test whether this is truly the case, I am going to remove my widget for the next day or two. If you still experience problems, can you let me know? Thanks!
P.S. Not to be an anti-MS snob, but so many of these problems vanish if you use Firefox!
ETA: To remove your widget:
- From your Dashboard, click Layout.
- From the Page Elements page, find your Followers element and click Edit.
- When the pop-up window displays, click Remove.
- Click OK and you're done!
Nope. Just because you remove the widget, does not mean that you "remove" your followers. Your followers can still see your updates (via their Dashboard or Google Reader), you just can't display the widget on your blog if you want those IE users to see your site.
In fact, you can always "follow" someone whether they have a Followers widget or not (and even if they use another blogging platform such as Wordpress or Typepad).
- From your Dashboard, (under the "Blogs I'm Following" tab), click Add.
- When the pop up window displays, enter the URL you wish to follow.
- Click Next.
- Choose whether you want to follow the blog publicly or not.
- Click Follow and the site is added to your Dashboard (and, if applicable, your Google Reader).

Aha...I knew if I popped over here you might have an answer for all my techie problems....how does a non-techie temporarily remove the Google Followers widget?
Had lots of problems yesterday too...but it seems better today...I did download firefox...and noticed I could view all the websites IE couldn't. Somedays....I feel like the Puter takes over my Life...LOL.
I only had this problem once today - going to another blog. All I did was go back to my blog & try to acess it again & it worked no problems. But if I come across it again I will try your suggestion.

That was why someone emailed me a while ago to say my blog wouldn't work, i tried it in IE and had the same error so i told her to try firefox and it worked! It would have been around the same time i added followers
That is funny because I was viewing a lot of blogs at work and it kept kicking me off with that error message, yes they use Internet Explorer at my work. I figured they were about to stop us from getting on the internet. Happy that is might be that.
Thanks Allison for shedding some light on the problem. I was getting this message at home and at work just on certain blogs. Now I know it's not just me. Sometimes though, if you hit refresh the blog will load.

Thank you for explaining this to the non-experts like me! I was so frustrated last night, I was thinking it was a sign of some kind to get off of the computer and get back to rest, ha! I'll stay tuned for more info that you discover!!

Wow! I was wondering what was up!!! I figured it was someone's way of telling me to finally switch to firefox...so I did...but a lot of folks do not, so I will take off my followers widget! I lost a couple of followers anyway....not that i had a not....poor me...
