Who's the sweetest girlie that you know with a congenital heart defect? That's right...Ms. Avery. She was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (you can read about the diagnosis here) and many of you flooded me with support during that first tenuous month of her life. Although she is beset with delays and cerebral palsy, she is a happy, healthy girl who I am slowly introducing to what she has been through so far (I always ask "Where's Avery's scar?" and she points to it. And then I say, "Where's your heart?" and she points to that place. I then say "Yes, that's Avery special scar for her very special heart.)
So today is CHD Awareness Day. When you think of this, remember that one of every 100 babies is born with some type of CHD (which I find stunning). I remembered it for Avery today with her special Valentine (the CHD ribbon is blue and red to signify the blood flow problems that are almost always associated with a CHD).

With a strong, intelligent Mother and a loving, supportive family by her side, Avery will no doubt, continue to grow and flourish despite her medical issues. We have serious heart issues in our family so I know the importance of awareness.
Ave is blessed to have you as parents. She is, and always has been, a precious, beautiful little girl. Love her Valentine.

How did you know that Avery is the sweetest girl I know with CHD? I really like that you are sharing it with her - I struggled with when to talk to my kids about autism, so I imagine that beginning that process was tough for you. I'm a pretty firm believer in giving kids what they're ready for, and especially with that beautiful scar that helped save her life, Ave would start having questions, right?
Anyway, I love the awesome Valentine :) And it's hardly preachy to spread awareness...preach on :)

Awwww! That sweet Avery. She is so very beautiful. You are such a great Mom & it's fabulous that CHD Awareness Day is linked with Valentine's. Love your sweet lil' bear card. He looks so huggable (but not as squeezable as Avery!)
